1178 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver

Abundant air and light motivate the design of this masterpiece of modern architecture, a building unlike anything else in Vancouver. Entering from West 7th avenue is an architectural revelation. Extremely high ceilings and fully glazed walls perfectly compliment the clean interior details.

The central fully exposed staircase interleaves graceful steel stringers, solid edge grain fir treads and stainless steel railings from ground level to the opening roof skylight. Sunlight reflects from the wood and shines through the open treads, projecting a warm fan of light through to ground level. A massive sliding glass roof canopy provides access to a lushly landscaped private roof deck, finished with stone, stainless steel and waterfall features. The open canopy provides a natural chimney for summer heat and connects the interior spaces with the outdoors.

The design emphasizes natural light and air flow. High loft windows create naturally bright spaces, and cross ventilation through the length of the building provides excellent passive air conditioning.

The ground orientation of the units and the open plan of the high loft main floor are a dramatic street level gesture and create a wonderful invitation to the more intimate spaces of the upper floor.

The hillside location provides a wonderful north facing panoramic view over Granville Island of downtown Vancouver.
